About the project

Objectives of the i³ Sense module project
Exploration of bio-based sensors for load-bearing materials in construction, automotive, and sports industries involves investigating:
-
The identification of:
-
Hygroscopic tendencies
-
Mechanical stresses
-
Crack propagation
-
-
Understanding the curing behavior of adhesives and thermosets. The application of cellulose-based sensors, utilizing materials like paper, wood, and other natural fibers, encompasses:
-
Harnessing intrinsic material properties (e.g., wood) for sensing purposes
-
Integrating extrinsic cellulose-based sensors into wood and composite materials.
Our Vision
The COMET Module i³ Sense establishes the scientific foundation for a revolutionary enhancement in the functionality, durability, and reliability of structural components made from wood and natural fibers. The anticipated performance improvement will be achieved through imperceptible, seamlessly integrated sensing of crucial parameters related to the production and lifespan of bio-based structural components, such as humidity, mechanical strain, and temperature. Specifically, humidity holds critical importance for the performance and reliability of any lignocellulosic material. Beyond a certain threshold, elevated humidity significantly hinders the functionality of lignocellulosic structural components by degrading mechanical performance, causing volumetric swelling and distortion, and posing risks of biological decay. i³Sense aims to provide technical solutions for early detection of critical humidity levels, paving the way for a new standard of reliability and durability in bio-based structural components.
